In-company case

A group of high potentials is selected by management to work on quality development and product innovation. Management asks esmachoho to incorporate these themes as part of a coaching and training program.

During the first session the group unanimously question why they have been selected for the program. From this emerges not only a lack of internal communication, but also the participants' distrust of management's motives. Our agency promises to address this at the next session. We ask each of the participants to indicate which values they feel are important at work, and what in particular they would like to see changed in their work practice over the next year. This question serves to chart out the personal values and learning objectives of each participant. Also, without consciously realizing it, during this first session the participants actually make the transition from unmotivated to motivated; a critical first step towards accomplishing the assignment. An extra session is planned with management, at which the trust issue is brought to the foreground and demarcated as a joint development goal.

Over the course of the year we delve increasingly deeper into the personal values and learning objectives of each participant. However, gossip and backbiting after each session make the joint development goal, i.e. trust, a stiff challenge. In this first year the individual participants make great strides in applying their personal values. However, negative competition and gossip continue to form an obstacle within the company. The progress achieved by the individual participants is (in)formally speaking above average; however their evaluation of the course is not all-out positive. esmachoho recommends to management to put a stop to the established culture of negative competition and gossip by setting the right example. Following this recommendation a number of the managers applied for executive coaching.
